Julian Alps
Little known outside Slovenia, the Julian Alps stretching from north-eastern Italy to Slovenia are the forgotten south-eastern section of the great alpine arc and include spectactular scenery most highlighted in Triglav National Park and its mighty peak, Mount Triglav which at 2864m is the highest mountain in Slovenia.
Lying between the river's Soca and Sava,
Triglav National Park protects numerous endemic animal and plant species in a region of high rocky mountains, deeply cut river gorges, high-mountain karst shafts, and attractive low mountains as well as the traditions of the once difficult life of mountain farmers and alpine dairymen.
The Julian Alps
are bejewelled by two picturesque lakes; Bled with its legendary island and the unspoiled high-mountain lake Bohinj in the Bohinj region. These mountains are located in the north western part of Slovenia and cover an area of around 4400km2.
The mountain range is divided into two large sections: the Eastern Julian Alps and the Western Julian Alps. Within this region there are approx 150 mountains over 2000m and 25 over 2500m high. Still pristine and as yet relatively uncommercialised the Julian Alps are one of the world's treasures - a challenge to every climber and trekking enthusiast.
In the modern world it is easy to get disenchanted with the rapid pace of life and we never have enough time to relax; however, in the Julian Alps, time stands still and the mighty mood of nature settles in the soul at any time of year and on whatever trail - this region offers an abundance of natural beauty and wildlife that will stay with you forever.
